Bangkok 28.02.08

Living It Up

We arrived in Bangkok after midnight at the Asia Hotel, in a huge lobby filled with flowers and chandeliers. For the first time, we had our luggage carried for us by a bellboy. It was only our third day, but it was already a relief not to carry those enormous things.

We were looked after very well here, with a huge buffet breakfast and pools on two floors of the hotel. We rushed off early though, to move our luggage to the hostel where we would spend the next night. We should have realised straight away, when three taxi drivers wouldn't take us because they didn't know where our hostel was, that it was going to be a very long day.

Back to Reality
We finally arrived at the hostel, after a phone call by the driver to the hostel for directions. Once again we carried our bags up 4 flights of stairs. The room was tiny and the aircon barely functioned, and the fresh paint from the room opposite ours nearly suffocated us. However we were not fased, and were keen to check out the city and see the Grand Palace.

Interesting sign at YHA hostel:

Bangkonned
Loren's first Tuk Tuk ride was exciting, but being fresh to the country we were conned into paying way too much for it. When we arrived at the Grand Palace, we were told by a friendly guy that the Palace was closed until 3.30pm because there was a Buddhist ceremony going on, so we should go visit the other temples around. He offered to get us a very cheap tuk tuk rate, so off we went to a few temples. But of course, it was not only the temples, it was also the jewel factory and the suit and dress factory, where we had to pretend to be interested in spending thousands on clothes and jewelry. We soon figured out that the drivers get vouchers for fuel etc if they take us to these places.

We saw a few reclining Buddhas throughout the day, some made of gold, and others....

We arrived back at the Grand Palace at 3.30pm, to find that it was closed, and we had been tricked. Still not having learnt our lesson, we were convinced to go on a long tail boat cruise, where the driver would drop us off at each of the major monuments and wait for us. So once again we were led by the collar of our shirts to the pier where we took a cruise around the river 'streets'.

Of course, we did not actually stop at any monuments, and the 'river market' was one khlong boat, not hundreds. But we enjoyed the ride, and the opportunity to see a different side of Bangkok along the river banks. We did stop to feed and pat the fish by the side of the river. They were everywhere, and so slimy to touch!
We found our hostel again, after a bit of a search, and went off to have a seafood dinner at the Suan Lum Night Bazaar. Loren struggled to resist the mountains of clothes, shoes, bags and jewelry at the market, and we came home with a few more things than we expected!

Patpong Night Market
We took a tuk tuk to the Patpong Night Market, where we saw a little bit of Thai 'ping pong'. We knew that it wasn't far from the hostel, so we decided to walk back instead of taking another wretched tuk-tuk. Of course, we got lost, and decided to take one in the end, where we got lost again because no one in Bangkok seems to understand the concept of road numbers. We left that driver behind and chose to walk again, and found ourselves right where we started. Finally we found a driver who could take us to a tower that we knew was near the hostel, and we found our way back, exhausted and relieved.
Impressions of Bangkok
Surprisingly, after our nightmare of a day, our impression of Bangkok is not entirely negative. We have decided never to trust anyone ever again, but apart from that, it was peachy. However, I suppose that these people are just the ones that follow tourists around to leach money out of them. I'm sure that the ones that keep to themselves, are perfectly nice people. We just had an overdose of the bad ones. Bangkok definitely needs more people like Andrew, our friend from the plane.
The air in Bangkok is even more polluted than in Hong Kong, but the streets are relatively clean. Everything is covered in concrete in the city, but by the river it's quite beautiful. The rivers are literally like streets, and some people have their own little river driveways. The houses on the river are built on spindly wood poles, and most decks are covered with pot plants of flowers.
For Loren, Bangkok was an animal's paradise. Dogs and cats roam freely on the streets, and there are even more on the banks of the rivers. The dogs look so happy, just running around playing with each other all day, or sunning themselves by the river. Maybe its cruel to have them locked up in our backyards.
When we return to Bangkok on our way back to Hong Kong, we will be much wiser, and are looking forward to finally seeing the elusive Grand Palace.

Second Day in Hong Kong 27.02.08

Our second day in Hong Kong was much more relaxed and lazy than our first one.
Dim Sum
After a nice sleep-in, we went off searching for a dim sum restaurant, as we had heard it was 'very Hong Kong'. We ended up in a restaurant called 'London Restaurant'. Surprisingly, we were the only westerners there, and the food was great! They came around with trolleys full of dishes of dumplings, spring rolls, shrimp wrapped in rice noodles and much more. Artur was surprised that one of the potato dishes we were served, was very much like one that his Lithuanian Grandmother Hela used to make.

Down by the Ocean

Feeling very satisfied after our dim sum meal, we walked down Nathan Road to the Ferry Terminal. The view from the ocean deck was amazing! It was like the Circular Quay of Hong Kong. The shore opposite us was lined with skyscrapers as far as the eye could see, and the ocean was full of ferries and huge cruise ships. There was a great vibe there, maybe it was the holiday spirit pouring off the cruise ships.

Just by the ocean deck, there was a display of cute balloon animals performing Olympic sports, to advertise the coming Olympic games in Beijing. We had a bit of a laugh, as some of the poses were a little ambiguous.

We flew out that night for Bangkok on Emirates Airline. Loren was thrilled by the scarves and hats that the Saudi Arabian airline hostesses were wearing (first time on a Emirates flight).

New Friend
While we were practicing some Thai phrases, we met a Thai man, Andrew, who was sitting next to us. He is the owner of several clothing factories in Thailand and Hong Kong. We had a great time chatting to him about the fashion industry and his travels around the world, and to the pret-a-porter fashion shows in Paris. He offered us a place at his home for the night, and to show us around Bangkok, but it was a little difficult because it was a weekday and he had to work. Hopefully we'll see him if he comes to Australia.

Loren's Favorite Drink - Honey Green Tea. Finally a flavoured tea that is not too sweet!

First Stop - Hong Kong

We're here! We made it! The flight was great, excellent food, hard to sleep though. So we arrived a little tired but excited and ready to explore.

First Impressions
The first thing that struck us about Hong Kong was how clean and organised it is. There are so many forms of transport, and excellent roads. Every sign has English and Chinese (Mandarin? sorry i'm ignorant when it comes to asian languages), and almost everyone in tourism, transport and hospitality speaks English.

The sidewalks are quite narrow, but there are really cool crossings where all the traffic stops, and pedestrians can cross wherever they like.

The air in the morning and at night is very foggy, and during the day there is a bit of smog and air pollution. You can see people wearing face masks on the street like surgeons, to protect their lungs.

Lost in Kowloon

Despite the organised road system, disoriented travellers such as ourselves might find it a little hard to locate their accomodation. We got off at the right bus stop, but proceeded to walk in every direction but the one that lead to our hostel. Our Octopus transport cards which kind of function like a debit card, made jumping on buses at the last second much easier to do.

Eventually we found our hostel on the seventh floor of one of the hundreds of high rise apartment buildings. There's an open air balcony where we can look out over the dirty tenement housing and a little alley way that makes up most of this building. We left our backpacks here and went off to have lunch at a place that the hostel manager recommended.

The restaurant reminded me of Hard Rock cafe on Chapel St. Maybe it was the little booths. There seems to be a TV in each restaurant. This one was blaring a dramatic asian soapie. Pretty funny to watch when you don't understand what's going on.

Stanley Market

We took the subway and a double decker bus to get to the famous Stanley Market on Hong Kong Island. The bus ride was amazing! We were at the front of the top floor with views of the coastline and little islands.

The ride through the city in Hong Kong was like riding through a concrete jungle, but when we got closer to Stanley, we almost thought we were by the Mediterranean Sea. The little roads curved around the coastline, with big Tuscan houses and huge hotels everywhere. There's definitely a strong influence from Britain, and consequently Europe.

Stanley Market was gorgeous! There was a beautiful colonial building by the water's edge, which is now filled with posh restaurants. Everything here is expensive, and the restaurants have mostly European food. It was so beautiful though, and the bus ride was worth the whole trip.

We noticed on the ride back, that most of the cars here are either extremely old or extremely new and expensive. Every new car is a Mercedes, BMW or lexus. There is no middle ground here when it comes to cars.

Mid-level Escalators
For those that don't know, this escalator system is the longest undercover escalator to be built in the world. It's massive! We took the escalator all the way to the top, which takes about 20 minutes, but we got off at Hollywood road for a while, to check out the little antique shops, and roadside stalls.

Hollywood road was really cute, and Loren is regretting not buying some of the cute little artifacts that she found there. Still being cautious on the first day about filling her pack with souvenirs.

Botanical and Zoological Gardens
At the top of the escalators, we found the botanical and zoological gardens. The gardens weren't much to see, but the animals were great, and it was free entry! Artur was addicted to the Lemurs, so we stayed for ages watching them. We gave a commentary on their activites, which we found quite hilarious at the time. It was like watching Big Brother, all the flirting and bitch fights over food etc. It was great.

The Peak
From the peak, you can see the best views of Hong Kong, especially at night. The Peak is a huge mountain, and there's also a tower on top for even better views. We took the tram to the top, which goes 45 degrees or steeper at some points in the climb. The city lights looked amazing from the top of the tower, but it was so freezing out on the terrace.

The only thing we would have changed would be to take the bus back down from mountain. We had to wait for over 40 mins in line for the tram in the freezing mountain night air. Having been enjoying the warmth of the day, we had not packed anything remotely suitable in our day packs to prevent us from freezing up there.

Dinner at Causeway Bay
We heard there was great original Hong Kong food at Causway Bay, so we went searching around for our dinner. We were starving at this point, and anything would have been good, but we turned down a take-away style Chinese restaurant and kept looking. There were hardly any restaurants even on the most recommended streets, so we had trouble. All the ones that looked good had no English on their menus. We finally found a Thai restaurant - not what we were after, but it looked great. The food there was amazing!! If you're ever in Hong Kong, go to the New Bangkok restaurant. We had a whole fish simmering over a flame on our table. It was soooo good.

We were planning on checking out the night life in Lan Kwai Fong, which is supposed to be pretty great, and Sunday nights are big for going out here, but we were exhausted by this point, so we limped home, nursing sore shoulders and feet, but happy hearts.
